He will be familiar to rugby audiences as the man who refereed the last World Cup final, as well as countless other international and top flight matches. Regarded as one of the world’s best referees, Nigel is famous for his humorous quips on the pitch and his TV appearances back home in Wales.

A little more about Nigel

Welshman Nigel Owens is a high profile international rugby union referee. Since taking up refereeing in 1987, Nigel Owens MBE has risen to prominence as one of rugby’s most respected officials. He is the most capped international referee in history, and officiated the Rugby World Cup Final in 2015. Fluent in Welsh and English, Owens is also known for his appearances on Welsh television. As an openly gay man, he has spoken extensively about his struggles with coming to terms with his sexuality in the world of rugby

Known for being a strong personality and great referee, In international terms Owens was the only Welsh referee at the 2007 World Cup in France, as well as the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand and has been an international referee since 2005. Proudly, Owens is one of two referees ever to be appointed to two consecutive Heineken Cup finals, the first being Munster v Toulouse at the Millennium Stadium in 2008 and the second Leicester Tigers v Leinster at Murrayfield in 2009. Owens is also a presenter on the Welsh TV show Jonathan and the sports-themed Welsh language chat show Bwrw'r Bar.
