Q&A with Hannah Osborne – Our Spa Manager

Our Spa Manager, Hannah Osborne, spills all on her journey in the beauty industry whilst giving advice to anyone considering a career as a Therapist.

1. How did you begin your journey in the Beauty industry?

Beauty was not my first career choice – from an early age I wanted to work in the travel industry. However, that didn’t quite go to plan, so I started working in hotels and somehow fell into beauty.

I decided to go back to college and study for an NVQ in Hair and Beauty, before concentrating on beauty in my final year. I then started up my own business in the hotel that I was working in at the time, which lasted for 9 months before I applied for a job as a Spa Therapist in a 5-star hotel Spa in Greece (hoping to mix in a bit of the travel element!), which was available during the summer season. Since then, I have worked in several 5-star spas, including Wildmoor Spa in Stratford upon Avon and the Mandarin Oriental in London, before becoming Spa Manager at the Vaulted Spa here at Kings Head.

2. What would be your advice to someone looking to progress in the beauty industry?

When working as a Therapist at Mandarin Oriental, I decided to study Spa Management, and settled on an online degree in International Spa Management through Derby University. I completed it whilst working full-time, and would absolutely recommend it. The course provided me with lots of valuable information and many management skills that I still use to this day.

3. What challenges have you encountered through working in beauty?

It’s not always glamorous and easy being in an industry dominated by women. Through experience, I have found that stronger, louder characters tended to progress more quickly than myself which I found tough. However, instead of letting it beat me I remained determined. The key is not to let disappointment knock you; know your strengths, and in time, you will find the right opportunity and thrive.

Many of my fellow students at college did not go into a spa career as they weren’t given the correct information and guidance. Therefore, I would be keen to see more support from colleges to people who are interested in working in the beauty industry.

4. What things should you consider when working in a spa?

Never forget how important it is to look after yourself. It can be tough doing treatments, such as massages, every day. It’s important to take time to look after yourself, which includes booking yourself in for massages. Additionally, working in a spa is not 9-5; you may miss important time with family or friends due to being unable to get the time off. However, this does have its perks – having time off in the week is great for quieter shopping days out!

5. Do you have any tips on becoming a better therapist?

During my career, I have met so many talented therapists from around the world. They have taught me so much, including new techniques and massage skills. I would recommend therapists to learn from each other to improve their skills – it definitely helped me.

It’s so important that in this industry, we support each other and learn from one another. Above all else, a career in spa is so rewarding – you can work anywhere around the world or have your own business – the possibilities are endless. There are many paths you can take – from becoming a massage therapist to a holistic therapist. I would recommend following your dreams!

Cotswold Afternoon Tea

Introduced into Britain in the early 1840s, the Afternoon Tea began its life as a mini meal, created as a way to cure the hunger endured between lunch and the evening meal. Developed as a private event, the Afternoon Tea was enjoyed by upper-class ladies in society, long before becoming a widespread treat to be indulged in by many.

It’s widely known that the British love an Afternoon Tea. Here at the Kings Head, we’re passionate about creating a feast that incorporates the most quintessentially British flavours and traditions, putting a modern twist on the nation’s favourite sweets and savouries that have been a staple of British diets for many years.

Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just simply going out for lunch, Afternoon Tea is renowned for its versatility in pleasing a variety of palates. At the Kings Head, we provide our guests with the perfect setting in which to enjoy an indulgent afternoon banquet. Our cosy sofas are placed next to a feature fireplace to create an at-home feel, where you’ll be able to sit back and relax before being presented with a delicious feast – but whether you decide to share it with your friends or have one all to yourself is entirely your choice!

Your Afternoon Tea begins with a layer of delicate finger sandwiches, featuring a range of traditional fillings. You’ll also be presented with a selection of warm scones, with fresh clotted cream and jam before tucking into a range of sweet, bite-sized cakes – and, not forgetting, a steaming pot of tea. If you’re feeling fancy, you can even add a little sparkle by upgrading to a Champagne Afternoon Tea – perfect for a birthday treat!

What better way to spend an afternoon than enjoying your favourite sweet and savoury treats surrounded by the beautiful countryside? For more information about our Afternoon Teas, please click here:

Cellar Cinema Nights

A hidden gem at the Kings Head, our Vaulted Cellar is the perfect place for you to cosy up to a good film. On the first Thursday of each month, the cellar is home to our Cellar Cinema Nights, where we show one of the nation’s favourite movies. Our guests even get unlimited popcorn!

At the Vaulted Cellar, we love to treat our guests to an array of blockbusters and classic films. With favourites like Dirty Dancing and Grease on show, our films can be enjoyed by all the family. This is a cinema room with a difference – the arched walls, ceiling and exposed brickwork provide the room with enhanced acoustics whilst adding to the relaxing atmosphere. With an archaic yet stylish design, our cellar provides the perfect setting and atmosphere for any genre of film.

Here at the King’s Head, we’re showing Murder on the Orient Express on Thursday 6th September. A thrilling murder mystery, detective Hercule Poirot is on a mission to search for the killer who conducted a murder aboard a train. Interrogating all passengers along the way, Poirot is determined to discover the person behind the mask before they can strike again. A gripping film full of suspense, this one will have you hooked from the very start. Be sure to book tickets well in advance to avoid missing out!

Upon booking, you’ll also have the option to finish the evening with a delicious one-course post-film supper for the ultimate experience. If this isn’t your cup of tea, you’ll still be treated to unlimited popcorn, so you’ll be stocked up throughout the film!

The doors to our vaulted cellar open at 6.30pm, followed by the film, which starts at 7.00pm. You’ll have plenty of time to get drinks and snacks before settling down to enjoy an unforgettable cinema experience!
